Description:

A young woman sailed from India to Guiana in the early 1900s to serve as a coolie. Coolie was a name given to laborers who were to replace the slaves in sugar plantations around the world. She was pregnant and travelling alone, and like many other coolies, she disappeared into history. The author, Gaiutra Bahadur, is the great-granddaughter of this woman. In this book, she goes on a journey into the past to find her great-grandmother. She not only traces the routes her great-grandmother took, but also found out about the other coolie women and their complicated lives. These women were outnumbered by men and eventually became victims of sex too. Coolie Woman is the story of these women and the lives they led.
